From Changuimun Gate to Pyeongchang-dong: The Complete Half-Day Route

A three-to-four-hour walking route across a subway-free hillside, from Changuimun Gate to the gallery row of Pyeongchang-dong — with backup plans ready for rain, closures, or accessibility needs.

The core route

1. Changuimun Gate (also called Jahamun) — Your starting point, stepping outside the old city wall. Look at where the gate tower connects to the remaining fortress wall.

2. Yun Dong-ju Literature Museum — A free exhibition space that preserves the bones of a decommissioned pumping station. A good place to extend your visit if it's raining.

3. Mugyewon — A recreated hanok on the former site of Prince Anpyeong's retreat. Remember: this is a recreation, not the original structure.

4. Baeksasil Valley — A valley with ruins believed to be a Joseon-era retreat site. Stay on the marked trail.

5. Segeomjeong — A pavilion rebuilt in 1977. Notice its relationship to the Hongjecheon stream.

6. Seokpajeong / Seoul Museum — See the original, legally protected pavilion alongside the contemporary museum building next to it.

7. Whanki Museum — The museum honoring painter Kim Whanki, reopened after renovation in 2024.

8. Pyeongchang-dong gallery row — Finish at the cluster of galleries including Gana Art Center and the Hwajeong Museum.

Backup routes for different situations

If it's raining heavily

Start at a café near Changuimun Gate
→ Spend more time at the Yun Dong-ju Literature Museum
→ Focus your route on indoor stops: Seokpajeong/Seoul Museum and the Whanki Museum
→ Skip the outdoor sections at Baeksasil Valley and Segeomjeong

If the museums are closed

If walking is difficult, or accessibility is a concern

Skip the sloped sections at Baeksasil Valley and Segeomjeong. Walk only as far as Changuimun Gate, the Yun Dong-ju Literature Museum, and Mugyewon, then take a bus directly to the Pyeongchang-dong gallery row.
