Kukkiwon Translated Taekwondo into Shared Global Rules

Kukkiwon opened on a Yeoksam hill in the 1970s as taekwondo’s central dojang, administering rank tests, instructor education, research, and international promotion. It helped organize techniques and institutions into common systems through which taekwondo spread as martial art and sport.

Tradition and modern sport institutions were built together

Taekwondo emphasizes Korean martial lineages, while today’s competition rules, ranks, and protective equipment were standardized through modern organizations and international tournaments. Do not claim one unchanged form existed for thousands of years.

A black belt records training, not a souvenir

Poom and dan require defined training and tests. A brief experience is not an official qualification. Follow instructor and facility rules when wearing uniforms for photographs.

Separate event schedules from ordinary visits

Competitions, demonstrations, and courses can restrict access and seating. Check official visitor information and never film children or athletes without permission. Keep residents’ routes in Yeoksam Park clear.
