Daegwallyeong Old Road is now presented as a wooded walk. It once formed a crucial connection between Gangneung and East Sea Yeongdong on one side and Pyeongchang, Wonju, and inland Yeongseo on the other. Officials, examination candidates, peddlers, tax goods, mail, and news crossed through human and animal effort. A gentle modern downhill itinerary can obscure snow, rain, wind, grade, baggage, lodging, and fodder that historical movement required.
The road was never one immutable line
Routes shifted with terrain, season, maintenance, and new road construction. Every marked meter is not an untouched Joseon roadbed. Modern decks, stairs, forestry tracks, and reconstructed sections overlap older paths. Old maps and station records should be separated from a current park map.
Crossing the pass moved a regional economy
Seafood from the coast and grains or goods from inland moved through exchange networks, but not always in one direction or one fixed volume. Carriers calculated load, weather, lodging, and safety. Inns and relay stations were practical infrastructure for people, horses, information, and supplies, not merely romantic taverns.
Modern roads gave the old route a new job
Highways and tunnels reduced travel time and redirected freight. The former route became a forest-recreation and history space. Less traffic did not mean unmanaged wilderness: planting, thinning, erosion control, trail repair, and fire prevention maintain it. Storm, landslide, ice, or fire risk may require closure.
Prepare for a mountain route
Confirm separate start and finish points, elevation, transport return, weather, communications, and a turnaround option. Record actual time with rests rather than repeating one promotional duration. Shrines, markers, and inn sites may be original remains, restorations, or later interpretation, and installation dates matter. Respect ritual spaces, forestry vehicles, other walkers, and restrictions on bicycles or animals. Do not collect plants or stones. The road’s value lies in the labor that connected two sides of a mountain range and in its present management as forest and memory after modern transport replaced it.
