Gwaneumsa’s foundation legend features the blind father Won Ryang, his devoted daughter Won Hong-jang, envoys from Jin, and an Avalokitesvara image. Set around 300 CE, it says Seongdeok enshrined the image and founded the temple.
The story appears in a temple history compiled in 1729. Because its setting predates Baekje’s documented official acceptance of Buddhism in 384, it is presented as a temple tradition rather than a confirmed founding date.
