The difference likely reflects definitions of endpoints and should be acknowledged rather than silently corrected. The meaningful task is not memorizing one number. It is seeing how a prison, gates, village roads, and mountain pass formed connected geography during persecution.
Distinguishing pilgrimage from recreational imitation
Modern walkers choose the route with suitable shoes, water, and freedom to stop; arrested believers did not. Completing the same distance does not reproduce their experience. Avoid claims that a difficult walk allows visitors to “feel exactly what they felt.” Instead, consider the gradient, distance, guards, and fear attached to involuntary movement. Catholics may walk in prayer and repentance, while non-Catholics may reflect on state violence and freedom of belief. Both uses can coexist if walkers respect scheduled group pilgrimages and share the path.
Checking field signs as well as the online map
Sections pass along neighborhood streets, village roads, and areas with vehicle traffic. Do not stare only at a phone; use crossings and current trail markers. Construction and landscape projects can change surfaces or create detours. Because official pages themselves show slightly different distances, decide the day’s segment and return plan before departure. In summer heat or after rain and snow, a short walk between the fortress and holy ground may be wiser than the entire route. Completion is less important than safety and historical attention.
Remembering that the route crosses a living village
The pilgrimage path is also how residents reach homes, fields, schools, and shops. Do not enter private land for a shortcut, photograph residents over fences, block driveways with cars, or leave waste. Arrange transportation from Hanti Pass or the endpoint before setting out. A pilgrimage trail is not merely a line between monuments; it crosses a contemporary neighborhood. Respect for persecuted people in the past should become practical respect for people using the road today. Otherwise solemn words at memorials lose their meaning in the village between them.
