Naksan is known for an illuminated wall and a wide night view of central Seoul. At the same hour, shops and workshops in Ihwa-dong and Chungsin-dong are closing, residents are returning home, and children and older people are preparing to sleep. An evening walk should not be a second chance to consume sights missed during the day. It should reveal how a visitor destination and a residential neighborhood share the same limited space. Allow 100 minutes for approximately 2.3 kilometers from Ihwajang-gil across Naksan and down toward Chungsin-dong or Dongdaemun.
5:30 p.m.: Finish indoor visits first, then climb Ihwajang-gil
If you plan to enter Ihwajang or nearby exhibition spaces, check closing days and last admission times and complete those visits before sunset. After a gate closes, do not reach a camera over the wall. On Ihwajang-gil, remain alert to residents' vehicles and scooters emerging from low-walled lanes and blind corners.
6:10 p.m.: Do not search every residential lane for murals that may no longer exist
View the National Housing area and public art from signed routes and clearly open lanes. If a mural from an old blog post has disappeared, do not circle from house to house trying to locate it. After businesses turn off their lights, reduce conversation and avoid photographing entrances. Read the width of the lanes, the stairs, and the housing layout rather than collecting every remaining image.
6:40 p.m.: Watch the ground before the skyline on the city wall
Official information describes the Naksan route as open around the clock, but temporary restrictions for construction, severe weather, or events always take precedence. Never climb onto the wall or beyond a railing. On dim steps, watch the path rather than a phone screen. Be especially cautious of winter ice, wet stone after rain, and dehydration after hot summer days.
7:10 p.m.: Descend by a clear route and finish on a main road
Do not choose an unfamiliar residential stairway simply because it appears to be a shortcut. Follow mapped routes and signs toward a wider descent. Keep workshop access open for late deliveries, and do not photograph illuminated residential windows. Ending at Jongno 6-ga or Dongdaemun Station reduces unnecessary night traffic in residential lanes and provides clear public transportation.
