Jeongamsa stands in the mountains of Gohan-eup. Temple tradition credits the monk Jajang with foundation during Queen Seondeok's Silla reign, and the site is known for Jeokmyeolbogung devotion to the Buddha's relics. This does not date all present timber and halls to Silla. Fire, repair, and reconstruction changed material while temple function continued.
Sumano Pagoda is not an age label for everything
The pagoda on the slope is a stone structure cut and stacked in imitation of brick, assessed as Goryeo work and designated a National Treasure. Relic records, repairs, discoveries, and the formal heritage name require official sources. One old pagoda does not make every building and road the same-period original.
Jeokmyeolbogung is not an empty hall
This Buddhist space may contain no central statue because worship is oriented toward a relic-bearing pagoda or sacred location. Visitors unfamiliar with Korean Buddhism can misread absence as emptiness. “True-body relic” is language of faith and ritual, not a claim to translate as a scientifically verified specimen. Respect direction, worshippers, and photography limits.
Temple and mining city passed through adjacent times
Gohan–Sabuk coal development, population, roads, and commerce affected access and the surrounding community. Miners' and families' religion is part of local history. Yet Jeongamsa should be neither an accessory to mine tourism nor an isolated ancient world unaffected by industry.
Visit mountain and religious space responsibly
The route to the pagoda changes with snow, ice, rain, fire risk, conservation work, and religious events. Check gradient, walking time, vehicle control, and present access; administrative proximity to Gohan Station is not easy walking distance. Do not enter residential practice areas, assume templestay or temple food is always available, or treat every temple building as a National Treasure. Distinguish foundation tradition, Goryeo pagoda, later halls, conservation discoveries, and current liturgy. Jeongamsa's value lies not in an age competition but in maintaining another continuity beside a mountain district transformed by mining.
