The Jeongseon Rail Bike uses track from Gujeolli toward Auraji and offers a valley view from a pedal vehicle. It became a well-known example of rail reuse, but the line was not laid for recreation. The Jeongseon Line connected mountain residents, coal, and goods to a larger network; industrial and transport change altered the role of selected sections.
Rail carried mineral and people together
Southern Gangwon rail moved heavy coal while serving students, merchants, workers, and residents. Reduction or closure changes station commerce, commuting, school access, and rail employment, not only a timetable. Ask what the picturesque track carried before visitors.
Reuse adds operation to existing infrastructure
Track and station can avoid demolition and attract spending, but vehicles, brakes, spacing, signals, tunnels, rockfall, weather, rescue, and return transport require labor and money. Pedalling, unloading, and return policy can change. It is not “using an abandoned line for free.”
How much industrial history remains?
Characters and photo zones help entry but can displace the story of construction, freight, workers, and local passengers. Use station interpretation and archives. Success should include maintenance cost, safety, local employment, business connection, and resident transport impact as well as visitor counts.
“Disused” needs legal precision and rail discipline
Entire line abandonment, suspended passenger service, and tourism conversion of one section are different. Verify current owner, operator, and connection to live rail. A pedal vehicle does not transfer safety responsibility from operator to customer: spacing, braking, rescue, and recovery remain systems. Follow staff, never dismount or overtake, check age, height, health, rain, ice, reservation, and cancellation. Other tracks may still operate; do not enter for photography. Avoid treating village roads and parking as visitor property. The rail bike's real value is the new labor and risk management that makes industrial infrastructure work again.
