Cheong Wa Dae—the former presidential office commonly called the Blue House—the prime minister's official residence, government facilities, and diplomatic premises bring police posts, security infrastructure, and periodic traffic control into close contact with homes. This is not merely the picturesque background of an affluent neighborhood. It is an unusual urban boundary between political power and everyday residence.
Physical proximity never guaranteed free public access
During authoritarian rule, checkpoints, restrictions on photography, and controlled movement around Cheong Wa Dae affected daily life. Residents and merchants faced limited outside access even as some local businesses depended on official functions and security-related demand. The wider history includes the tightening of control around Bugaksan and the presidential compound after the 1968 armed infiltration attempt.
The opening of Cheong Wa Dae redrew tourism routes
When the compound opened to the public in 2022, far more people began walking between Gyeongbokgung, Cheong Wa Dae, Samcheong-dong, and Bukchon. Entering what had been a closed center of executive power carries democratic symbolism, but access methods can still change with reservations, events, and security conditions. Check the official guidance on the day of your visit and do not treat a barrier as an obstacle installed merely to spoil a photograph.
Official residences and private homes are not tourist exhibits
Even where a building is visible from a public road, avoid close photographs of security posts, vehicle license plates, and the faces of people entering. A map application may suggest a narrow residential alley as a shortcut, but signs, staff instructions, and private-property boundaries take priority. If a demonstration or official event redirects traffic, follow police and event staff to a larger road.
