Baekje Tombs Beneath Korea’s Technology District

Pangyo is famous for technology companies, yet development excavations revealed Goguryeo and Hanseong Baekje stone-chamber tombs. Pangyo Museum preserves and interprets them, lengthening the district’s timeline far beyond the 2000s.

What a stone chamber can tell us

Entrances, chamber plans, pottery, ornaments and coffin nails help researchers interpret burial practice and movement south of the Han River. Do not turn counts of “one Goguryeo and nine Baekje tombs” into a simple modern border story; identity and chronology are inferred from material evidence.

Preservation involved moving remains

The displayed tombs were transferred and reconstructed after excavation. They are genuine archaeological structures, but no longer sit in an unchanged original landscape. Read which stones are original, what was supplemented and where each tomb was found.

Development revealed and displaced the past

Outside, compare the museum with wide roads and office towers. Archaeology did not merely stop construction; it documented the ground and forced decisions about what to retain and relocate. Check reservations for guided or children’s programs, respect photography rules and treat words such as “estimated” as uncertainty, not a fact lost in translation.
