The current city did not preserve one ancient county boundary. It emerged in 1989 from areas associated with Sorae, Suam and Gunja amid wider municipal separations and transfers. Seoul’s Siheung-dong carries the memory of the older county center, while today’s Gyeonggi city is a different administrative formation. Northern hills, central fields and southwest industry and coast remain distinct travel zones.
