Cheonggyecheon was covered and then reopened as an urban waterway in 2005. The project created a popular walk but did not restore the former ecosystem unchanged; redevelopment and high-rise housing also altered rent, consumption, deliveries, noise, and who could remain.
Context
The restored channel is supplied and managed as contemporary urban infrastructure. It offers cooling, walking, and public space, but should not be described as the unchanged return of an old river.
What changed
High-rise redevelopment brought residents and spending power while increasing pressure on rent, delivery access, odor, and noise. New housing and old commerce depend on one another yet can also conflict.
How to visit
Judge “improvement” by more than clean paving and property values. Ask which traders and tenants could remain, which moved away, and whose daily route became easier or harder.
