Yeongneung holds King Sejong and Queen Soheon together. The tomb was moved to present-day Yeoju in 1469 from its earlier site south of Seoul.
Look beyond a single scene
Reading it only as a monument to Hangul hides the queen, royal funerary practice and generations of maintenance. Today’s landscape also reflects later conservation.
Separate evidence from interpretation
Moving a royal tomb meant rebuilding ritual space, routes and a managed landscape, not merely relocating a mound. The exhibition of Sejong’s achievements and the tomb’s funerary order are different kinds of historical evidence. Reading both also restores Queen Soheon and the generations of workers who maintained the site to the story.
A note for visitors
Stay on public paths and respect restrictions around the burial mound and rites.
