Calling Bongeunsa a temple founded on this exact site in 794 flattens a complicated history. The temple preserves a Silla-period founding tradition, while records from Joseon and the later relocation give firmer ground for understanding today’s site.
A temple serving a royal tomb
After King Seongjong died, Queen Jeonghyeon expanded Gyeonseongsa near Seolleung as a memorial temple. The name Bongeunsa appears as the work was completed in the late 1490s.
The present grounds came later
When King Jungjong’s tomb was moved toward the old temple site, Bongeunsa relocated to its present place on Mount Sudosan around 1562. Compare the directions of Seolleung, Jeongneung and Bongeunsa instead of imagining the current layout as an untouched ancient original.
