Deungnyang Station opened in 1930, with the opening of what is now part of the Gyeongjeon Line. Today it is a small, unremarkable rural station where Mugunghwa-class trains pass through only eight times a day — the kind of ordinary country stop one might easily overlook. Yet the "Street of Memories" built around this station has transformed this small station into an entirely different kind of destination.
Created in 2011 through a cultural-design project of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, this street consists of more than a dozen exhibition spaces in which local residents faithfully recreated the appearance of tea rooms, stationery shops, and classrooms from the 1970s and 80s. What draws particular attention is that the objects on display here are not replicas but actual antiques used during that era. For this reason, Deungnyang Station attracts a notably young crowd of visitors. This small station, where a train stops only eight times a day, now finds itself, somewhat ironically, crowded with young people eager to photograph a period they were never alive to witness firsthand.
