Jeongdok Public Library's spacious grounds and brick buildings strongly contrast with the adjoining hanok lanes. This was the campus of Gyeonggi High School. When the school moved to Gangnam in 1976, the existing buildings were converted into a library. Modern educational architecture forms a major layer of Bukchon's historic landscape alongside hanok.
Schools organized the rhythm of the neighborhood
Students commuting, stationery shops, lodgings, and teachers' homes shaped surrounding commerce and daily movement. When a school relocates, more than a building becomes empty: flows of people and spending leave with it. The quiet library grounds should also be imagined as a former world of school life.
Gangnam development changed more than the south side of the river
Development and elite-school relocation policies in the 1970s moved people and institutions from northern Seoul to Gangnam. The former Whimoon High School site gained the Hyundai corporate headquarters, while the Constitutional Court entered the former Changdeok Girls' High School site. Large new facilities altered Bukchon's low skyline and urban functions.
Adaptive reuse is one way of retaining memory
Jeongdok Library uses the old classrooms and grounds for reading and public rest. The function changed, but architecture and experience continued. Look beyond seasonal blossom photographs to corridors, the former field, and height differences with surrounding lanes to see how educational history remains in the present space.
