Hongneung takes its name from Empress Myeongseong’s first burial place. After her tomb moved to Namyangju following King Gojong’s death, the site remained while forestry research, institutes, and universities developed nearby. An emptied royal landscape became a space for modern forest science and technology.
Hongneung Forest is not an ordinary public park
Research and conservation determine its limited opening times and zones. Check seasonal reservations and never collect plants or leave trails. Understand it as a research forest rather than a secret urban woodland.
Yeonghwiwon and Sunginwon are different royal sites
Nearby Yeonghwiwon holds Imperial Consort Sunheon; Sunginwon holds her grandson Yi Jin. They differ from the former Hongneung in person and rank, so do not call them all royal tombs of the same kind. Read the distinctions among neung, won, and myo.
A research district extends beyond institutional walls
Researchers, students, shops, and residents sustain Hongneung. Do not film secure facilities or enter restricted grounds. Along Hoegi-ro, read royal memory, forest, and laboratories as layers of separate periods.
