On a first visit, it is easy to see only a monumental shopping complex or a single historic gate. The area's real structure lies where inside and outside the old capital, retail and production, and level streets and Naksan's steep slope meet. A roughly two-kilometer, 110-minute climb from Dongdaemun Station past Heunginjimun, Changsin Market, the sewing alleys, and the quarry face reveals several different versions of Seoul.
0–25 minutes: Read the city boundary at Heunginjimun
Heunginjimun was the great eastern gate of the Seoul City Wall. Its gatehouse and semicircular defensive wall survive, while nearby stretches of the main wall were severed by roads and urban development. Rather than treating the traffic-bound gate as an isolated relic, imagine the wall continuing toward Naksan in one direction and Gwanghuimun in the other.
25–70 minutes: Connect clothing production and distribution behind the market
Finished garments in Dongdaemun pass through many processes hidden from shoppers. Enter Changsin-dong and motorcycles loaded with fabric and supplies, bundles of cut cloth, and small sewing workshops appear. 70–110 minutes: Climb the quarry slope slowly
Beyond the sewing alleys, stairs and gradients become steeper toward the old quarry. The meeting of cliff, homes, and workshops is first a living environment, not a tourist panorama. Stay on public routes and designated viewpoints, avoid forcing a climb through narrow residential stairs, and check how you will descend before continuing.
