Deokpojin guarded the water route from the West Sea to Seoul

Deokpojin is a coastal artillery site aimed at the narrow channel linking the West Sea with the Han route to the capital. Its value lies in the direction of the batteries and their view over shipping lanes, not in high walls. The site is connected with nineteenth-century foreign incursions, but each incident, battery and date must be checked separately. Excavated positions, reconstructed masonry and surviving remains are not identical. Artillery also required ammunition transport, signalling, supply and maintenance.
