The Mujang Uprising Site, the place where the Donghak Peasant Revolution turned into a nationwide movement, was designated a national Historic Site on May 2, 2022. It took 128 years from the moment the proclamation issued here became the spark for a national revolution.
For a long time, this site survived only in local memory and a handful of markers. That it took over a century for the state to formally designate this place as a historic site says something about how belatedly this revolution's history found its proper standing. Visitors who come here now hear, at a site the state has finally recognized, the echo of the proclamation that rang out on this ground 128 years ago.
