Sorok Bridge, connecting Nokdong Harbor and Sorokdo Island, broke ground in June 2001 and was structurally completed in June 2008, but because access-road construction had not yet been finished, its formal opening did not take place until March 2, 2009. The bridge spans 1.16 kilometers, and before it was built, Sorokdo was an island reachable only by boat.
The opening of this bridge carries meaning beyond a simple improvement in transportation convenience. The fact that an island which had symbolized isolation and confinement for nearly a century was now a place a car could reach directly from the mainland symbolically marks a turning point in the history Sorokdo had lived through.
