A woldae is a broad raised stone platform before an important palace hall or gate. At Gwanghwamun it linked royal procession and ceremony across the boundary of the palace, with an eodo, or royal path, along its center. It should not be romanticized as a democratic square where king and subjects met freely; encounters, petitions, and ceremonies operated within a strict status order.
The platform did not disappear in one moment
The woldae was refurbished with Gyeongbokgung during the reign of King Gojong and later altered as the road changed. In the 1920s, double-tracking tram lines toward Tongui-dong and Anguk-dong damaged and removed the platform and its balustrade stones, leaving traces beneath the roadway.
Excavation found foundations and displaced stone
Archaeological work clarified its scale, stairs, and royal-path features. Specialists also examined form and tooling on stones removed elsewhere and returned some compatible components. Missing portions, however, required new material guided by records and comparison.
Reconstruction recovers history through present-day choices
The project changed the approach to the gate and pedestrian movement, and repositioned the haechi statues. Debate continues over traffic and the design of a national-symbolic space. Ask which period was chosen as the reference and what was retained, moved, or newly produced.
