Borimsa Temple · 🛕

An Iron Buddha Bearing the Date 858

An inscription behind the left arm of the Iron Seated Vairocana Buddha at Borimsa identifies its creation in 858, the second year of King Heonan of Unified Silla. Its securely dated inscription makes it an important reference for the study of Silla Buddhist sculpture and iron images.

The statue remains at Borimsa as a National Treasure. Unsupported rankings such as “the second oldest” have been removed in favor of the significance confirmed by the inscription.
