A Reproduction Guarding the Place Where the Original Once Stood

The Jeoksangsan Archive restored its Seonwonjeon Hall in 1997 and its Sillokjeon Hall in 1998. Today the site holds 34 reproduction volumes of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and 5 reproduction volumes of the royal genealogy, Seonwonrok.

The originals had vanished across the border, but the site was not left entirely empty. Creating reproductions to fill that space again was not merely the production of imitations — it was an expression of a refusal to fully give up on what had been lost. Visitors here today can, through these reproductions, see what the site was originally built to protect, even though what they see is not the original itself.
