Paju Book City was planned as a production cluster, not simply as a street of photogenic bookstores. Publishers, editors, designers, printers, binders, warehouses and distributors were brought closer together so that books could move through connected stages of work. Development, company relocation and later expansion occurred in phases; offices, logistics buildings, public cultural venues and cafés therefore belong to different dates and functions. The distinctive architecture matters, but so do loading docks, storage areas and the mostly invisible labor behind each book. Visitors should separate publicly accessible facilities from working offices, check each venue’s schedule, and avoid treating a book festival or a weekend crowd as the everyday condition of an industrial district.
