Samcheong-dong and Sogyeok-dong can look as though hanok roofs, art museums, and cafés have always belonged to one harmonious neighborhood. The landscape is much less seamless. Joseon royal and ritual offices, a modern school and hospital, a military security agency, post-democratization cultural institutions, and a tourism economy have occupied and rearranged the area in succession. A 120-minute walk of about 2.3 kilometers reveals buildings that disappeared, buildings moved away and returned, and a contemporary museum designed around the remains of earlier institutions.
Minutes 0–30: At Dongsipjagak, trace the palace wall across a road that severed it
Begin at Dongsipjagak, the southeastern watchtower of Gyeongbokgung. It now appears isolated like an island in traffic, but it originally joined the palace wall. Road construction and the dismantling of palace structures during Japanese colonial rule separated the tower from the compound. Stay within designated pedestrian areas rather than stepping into the roadway for a photograph, and visually reconnect the watchtower with Gyeongbokgung's eastern wall.
Minutes 30–60: Inside the museum grounds, distinguish buildings from different periods
Cross Samcheong-ro to the Seoul branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, generally shortened to MMCA Seoul. Look beyond the exhibitions and separate the red-brick former Armed Forces Seoul District Hospital, the building associated with the former Defense Security Command, and the museum's low contemporary galleries and open courtyards. The Gyeonggeundang and Okcheopdang halls of Jongchinbu, a Joseon office for affairs of the royal clan, also stand here after being returned to the site. The buildings within this single complex do not belong to one period.
Minutes 60–90: Read the history of a school on the hill at Jeongdok Library
Follow Hwa-dong-gil uphill to Jeongdok Library. The grounds and former classrooms once belonged to Gyeonggi High School; today they house a public library and the Seoul Education Museum. The site is popular for spring blossoms, but it also records how a major school moved south of the Han River and how a public library inherited a central-city campus rather than replacing it with private development.
Minutes 90–120: Walk the boundary between hanok, galleries, shops, and homes
Return to Samcheongdong-gil and continue north past small galleries, converted hanok businesses, and services used by residents. The commercial main street and residential lanes only one block away operate by different rules. Finish near the entrance to Samcheong Park. If daylight and energy remain, take a short walk inside the park, but return to the main road before the hillside paths become dark.
