Water helped make Seochon's lanes curve and descend rather than run in straight lines. Baegundongcheon and Ongnyudongcheon flowed from the southern slopes of Bukaksan and Inwangsan, passed through residential areas, and joined Cheonggyecheon. As Seoul grew, long sections were covered and now flow under roads.
Water was both infrastructure and danger
Valley water supplied drinking, washing, gardens, and recreation, but it could flood during heavy rain. Houses and roads were positioned either to avoid or use it. Following the actual slope rather than only a map reveals places where lanes still run parallel to a former stream.
The memory of water survives in names
Place names and signs, including Ongnyudongcheon-gil and Suseongdong—often interpreted through the sound of water—help recall vanished waterways. Today's road, however, should not be assumed to match the precise width of a Joseon stream. Covering and road works changed the line more than once.
Restoration is not a literal reversal of time
Some landscapes, including Suseongdong Valley, have recovered visible water and scenery, but an entire urban watershed cannot return exactly to its former state. A Seochon water walk is less about finding a perfect old landscape than reading how invisible nature still structures the contemporary city.
