Ewha moved from Jeong-dong to its present Sinchon campus in the 1930s. The older axis of stone Main Hall and auditorium coexists with the Ewha Campus Complex, opened in 2008. Their architecture records expansion from a women’s educational institution into a large research university.
ECC inserted space by opening the ground
Designed by French architect Dominique Perrault, ECC parts the campus terrain and sends a long central promenade below grade. Glass walls contain teaching, study, retail, and cultural facilities, while grass roofs continue the landscape. A descending valley, rather than a monumental façade, becomes the entrance.
Separate an open passage from university interiors
Even if the promenade feels public, classrooms, reading rooms, and offices belong to campus users. Do not zoom through glass at people or open doors during classes. Performances and exhibitions may need separate admission or reservations.
Actual circulation outranks a famous photo composition
People seeking a symmetrical image can block stairs and ramps. Avoid class-change crowds, tripods, and long setups. Visitors using wheelchairs or strollers should locate elevators and accessible slopes rather than assuming the central stairs are the only route.
