After the Korean War, the First Field Army headquarters and U.S. Camp Long were established in Wonju. The former headquarters building, dating to 1954, is Registered Cultural Heritage. Soldiers, families, and merchants affected population and commerce.
Bases produced business and restricted land
Military facilities generated employment and customers while closing large areas to civilians. Economic growth alone cannot describe residents’ experiences, land use, and the costs of security policy.
Camp Long did not become a park immediately
The unit moved to Pyeongtaek in 2010. Return negotiations, soil remediation, land purchase, and construction followed. Wonju has been converting the former base into a culture-and-sports park.
