The Wonju Lacquerware Craft Center stands near the road to Guryongsa in Socho-myeon. It displays and sells work by local craftspeople and prizewinning pieces from the Korean Lacquer Craft Competition. Finished shine can hide years of tree growth and repeated coating and drying.
Lacquer is both material and skilled labor
Quality depends on refinement, preparation, coating, and controlled curing. “Natural” does not mean harmless; raw lacquer can cause serious skin reactions.
Tradition is not a fixed object type
Lacquer appears on bowls and boxes as well as contemporary tableware, jewelry, and art. New uses are not automatically a loss of tradition, and products vary in method and quality.
