Academy Theater opened in 1963 and was demolished in October 2023 after the city changed from preservation to removal. Citizens opposing demolition were prosecuted after conflicts at the site; courts found all 24 defendants not guilty, and the appellate ruling was reported in April 2026. A new public platform occupies the site, but it does not preserve the spatial experience of the former single-screen theater.
