Evening at Changdeokgung begins when the last visitors leave through Donhwamun and staff close gates and organize courtyards. Outside the wall, residents return, workshops close, and restaurants and cafés grow busier. This 100-minute walk covers about 1.9 kilometers from Donhwamun through northern Wonseo-dong, keeping palace visitation separate from the later residential-lane walk.
5:20 p.m.: Confirm final palace viewing and the exit route first
Last admission, Rear Garden programs, and available exits change by season and event. Leave Nakseonjae or the garden with enough time to follow staff instructions toward the main gate. Do not delay closing work by repeatedly taking photographs at a gate being shut.
6:00 p.m.: View Donhwamun and the SPACE building exterior while daylight remains
Crosswalks and bus stops around Donhwamun become crowded at closing time. Never stand in the road for a frontal photograph. If the exhibition venue inside the former SPACE building has closed, do not photograph through the glass; study the brick volume and its relationship with the lane from the public pavement.
6:30 p.m.: Keep return-home routes open in Wonseo-dong
Cars, delivery motorcycles, and residents share narrow streets. Groups should walk in single file and move to a wider point before stopping for an explanation. A lit workshop or research room remains a workplace; do not film inside without permission.
7:00 p.m.: Pass the laundry site and wall quietly, then finish on a main road
Do not descend onto dark, wet stones at the laundry site. Reduce flash and voices around homes, and keep gates and garages clear when calling a taxi. Finish by reaching the better-lit Bukchon-ro or Changdeokgung-gil and continue toward Anguk or Jongno 3-ga Station.
