Silleuksa stands beside the Namhangang in Cheonsong-dong. Its Josadang shrine and stone pagodas are protected heritage, but the river is part of the site’s history, not merely a backdrop.
Look beyond a single scene
The river carried people and goods. Founding legends, later records and dated buildings should not be presented as equally certain.
Separate evidence from interpretation
The riverside setting made the temple part of a working corridor rather than an isolated retreat. Boat crews, travelers and residents living with changing water levels passed nearby. The present precinct also combines buildings of different dates, later repairs and visitor infrastructure, so “ancient temple” should not flatten every element into one period.
