Godalsa Temple Site is traditionally dated to 764. Buildings have vanished, while pedestals, stupas and stones associated with Monk Wonjong reveal a major Buddhist institution.
Look beyond a single scene
An empty site still contains evidence in foundations, layouts and carving. Written foundation traditions and archaeological conclusions should remain distinct.
Separate evidence from interpretation
Foundations, stone spacing and carved fragments help reconstruct movement through a temple whose buildings are gone, but they cannot prove every roofline or room use. A major monastery also depended on cooking, water, repair and land management. The labor of unnamed residents and artisans belongs beside the biographies of eminent monks.
