The Stele of Monk Wonjong was erected in 975. Its damaged inscription stone is kept at Yeoju Museum, while the tortoise base and cap remain at the temple site.
Look beyond a single scene
These pieces once formed one monument recording a monk, patrons, authorship and the state–temple relationship. Check labels for originals and replicas.
Separate evidence from interpretation
The broken and dispersed stele shows that stone records do not survive automatically. Site and museum each preserve only part of its context: sculpture and terrain at Godalsa, inscription and damage indoors. The text itself was an edited commemoration shaped by patrons and authors, not a neutral transcript of an entire life.
