Why does Hangeul Market use “Hangeul” in its name?

The name connects downtown commerce with Yeoju’s identity as the city of King Sejong’s tomb. It was not the market’s name in the Joseon period. It is a modern branding choice developed through traditional-market revitalization, signage and events. The historical continuity between royal tomb and market should not be exaggerated.

A name attracts visitors but cannot operate shops

Hangeul design distinguishes the market and can bring a heritage route into town. Daily customers buying food, clothing, meals and services still sustain the businesses. Focusing only on letters and murals obscures each shop’s trade, rent, vacancies, delivery work, parking and changing demand.

Commemoration is a contemporary choice

Royal tomb interpretation, Hangeul Day programs and market or road names extended Sejong’s memory into urban space at different times. They have educational and commercial effects. Products and decorations created today should not be presented as customs inherited directly from Sejong’s lifetime.

Readability matters more than decoration

The market’s name becomes practical when signs clearly communicate trade, price, toilets and entrances to older people, visitors and those needing translations. It remains a workplace, not an exhibition: ask before photographing faces or interiors, avoid blocking deliveries, and check current transport and opening information.
