In the Seogurim-ri area of Gunseo-myeon, Yeongam County, traces have been confirmed of what is believed to be the Korean peninsula's earliest production site for glazed pottery — ceramics coated with an ash-based glaze. Excavations conducted by the Ewha Womans University Museum in 1987 and 1996 revealed roughly 20 kiln sites distributed along a ridge known as Doljeong Pass. The investigation confirmed that these kilns were underground, single-chamber climbing kilns dug into the sloped terrain.
Two kiln sites, excavated respectively in 1987 and 1996, remain preserved today in their original condition, displayed to visitors beneath protective shelters. This site's scholarly significance earned it designation as Historic Site No. 338. Nearby, using the grounds of a now-closed school, the Yeongam Pottery Museum was established, where relics unearthed from the Gurim kiln sites are researched, collected, and displayed, alongside hands-on experiences allowing visitors to recreate and purchase pottery themselves. A place that once served as children's classrooms has, in this way, become another kind of classroom — one where visitors now learn the techniques of potters who worked more than a thousand years ago.
