Walk between the low buildings, chimney, guardhouse and artworks before entering. The site itself is an architectural document. Kim Chung-up, who worked in Le Corbusier’s atelier and became a leading first-generation Korean modern architect, designed the Yuyu Industrial factory early in his career.
A factory was more than a functional box
Production, research, boiler and security buildings had distinct roles. Sculpture, structure and light gave symbolic form to industrial architecture. Yet a celebrated design does not prove good labour conditions; aesthetics and factory work require separate questions.
Research and production became museums
The former research building houses the architecture museum, while the work building became Anyang Museum and the boiler house an education centre. Adaptive reuse does not freeze a building: circulation, services and safety are altered for a new function. Compare drawings with surviving and replaced elements.
Opened in 2014, the museum also displays models, notebooks and sketches. Avoid a lone-genius story; clients, engineers, workers and materials enabled the designs. For foreigners, an architect museum inside his own factory building is the best hook. The whole negotiation between industrial fabric and cultural use is the central exhibit.
