Choryang · 🚉

Across from Busan Station, half a day

Step off the KTX and stand in the station square: across the road, houses stack up a hillside like a staircase. That hillside is Choryang — a city refugees built up the stairs, walked in half a day.

Step off the KTX and stand in the station square, and the first thing you see — with the sea at your back — is a hillside of houses stacked like a staircase. That hillside is Choryang. For travellers who arrive knowing Busan only as a city of the sea, Choryang is the quickest teacher that Busan is also a city of slopes.

Busan, read vertically

Choryang’s structure is vertical: docks and station at the bottom, Chinatown and the market above them, then the 168 Stairs, and the hillside roads and lookouts at the top Fact. The vertical layers are layers of time as well — the port era built the bottom, the war built the top (Ep. 2). Simply walking uphill takes you through Busan’s modern history in order.

Why half a day, and how to start

Busan Station itself is the trailhead, so no transport planning is needed Fact. A 3–4 hour half-day walk linking Chinatown, the market, the stairs, Ibagu-gil and the lookouts fits well Estimate; to finish with the North Port night view, start in the afternoon. Remember one thing — this district’s grammar is not flat ground but gradient.
