Gochang-born poet Seo Jeong-ju (1915–2000) is regarded as a major figure in modern Korean poetry, while also criticized for pro-Japanese writings during colonial rule and praise of authoritarian governments. Gochang County’s official description presents both his influence and these controversies.
According to the Gochang County Council record, the Midang Poetry Museum displays seven pro-Japanese works with explanatory material in part of its exhibition. His literary achievement and historical responsibility should be considered together.
