Maecheon Hwang Hyeon (1855–1910) was a late-Joseon scholar and historian who continued writing in Gurye. After Korea lost sovereignty on August 29, 1910, he left four final poems and a testament and died for his cause at his Gurye home on September 7.
The former September 10 date has been corrected from government information. The text avoids romanticizing or describing the method and centers the historical act and writings of a scholar facing annexation.
