The walk from Seoul Grand Park Station to the zoo is longer than the station name suggests. Its scale reflects a national-era ambition to build a vast family leisure complex. Construction began in 1978 and Seoul Grand Park opened in Gwacheon on 1 May 1984, according to its official history.
Animals and public memory were relocated together
During Japanese rule, Changgyeonggung Palace had been turned into the amusement ground Changgyeongwon, with a zoo among its attractions. Restoring the palace meant moving its animals to the new site in Gwacheon. The transfer was therefore both the birth of a modern park and part of Korea’s effort to undo a colonial transformation of royal space.
From displaying animals to caring for species
Older zoos emphasized collection and spectacle. Contemporary institutions speak more about welfare, research, education and conservation, although those goals do not erase every ethical problem. Compare old photographs with enclosure design, enrichment and endangered-species interpretation today. Never knock on glass or demand that a sleeping animal perform.
The zoo, botanical garden and other park zones are too large to “complete” comfortably in one day. Select two or three areas and include rest and return time. Lifts, the elephant train and individual exhibits may close or charge separately. For foreign visitors, the richest route is not a species checklist but a careful look at how an exhibition born from a colonial amusement ground is trying to become a responsible conservation institution.
