Catholics fleeing persecution after 1801 formed a community in Pungsuwon, Seowon-myeon. Residents maintained religious life for decades before a resident priest arrived, and the present church was completed in 1907. The community’s endurance came before the building.
A church led by a Korean priest
Father Jeong Gyu-ha and parishioners organized construction. Korean clerical leadership matters, but so do unnamed residents who supplied money, materials, and labor.
Refuge was not romantic isolation
Mountain settlement also meant insecure livelihoods and restricted movement. A peaceful landscape should not erase the pressures behind migration.
Worship continues today
Masses, funerals, and parish events take priority. Do not enter sanctuary or cemetery areas casually, and ask before photographing people.
