The shrine to Choe Chiwon and a separate shrine to the Joseon-era official Sin Jam had stood apart for generations. Over time the two merged into a single institution, and in 1696, the 22nd year of King Sukjong's reign, the crown granted it the royal name "Museong" (武城), making it a saek seowon — a royally chartered academy whose scholarship and ancestral rites carried the state's formal recognition.
Merging two separate memories under one name is not a simple administrative act. It meant this region chose to remember not only Choe Chiwon but the teachers who came after him, across generations. The name Museong Seowon carries those layered decades inside it.
