On September 16, 1597, the Joseon fleet commanded by Admiral Yi Sun-sin defeated a Japanese fleet at Uldolmok, the narrow strait between Jindo and the mainland. Accounts differ on the exact number of ships involved, but agree that Joseon was heavily outnumbered and used the strait’s powerful currents to its advantage.
Yi turned his knowledge of the channel’s terrain and tides into a tactical advantage. The fast current beneath today’s Jindo Bridge helps visitors understand the setting of the battle.
