Jindo Arirang was designated Jeollanam-do Intangible Cultural Property on July 21, 2022, and, following a change in relevant legislation, its category name was changed to "Intangible Heritage" on May 17, 2024.
A song passed down for a long time only through oral tradition has now gained a name the law is bound to protect. That the designation's name changed more than once might seem minor, but each change reflects the ongoing consideration of how the state should define and safeguard this song.
