For a first walk through Namdaemun and Hoehyeon-dong, begin at Sungnyemun and establish your bearings. To the north lay the walled Joseon capital; the road to the south once continued beyond its gate. A market expanded along that boundary, the railway arrived nearby, and an automobile overpass was eventually remade as a pedestrian path. A slow, 100-minute walk of roughly two kilometers reveals six centuries of urban change along one line.
0–25 minutes: Read the boundary at Sungnyemun
Completed in 1398, Sungnyemun was the principal southern gate of the capital wall. The familiar name Namdaemun simply means “Great South Gate,” while the characters on its signboard give the official name Sungnyemun, or “Gate of Exalted Rites.” Look beyond the gate itself to the missing wall on either side and the surrounding roads. Together they explain how a working entrance to the capital came to stand like an island amid modern traffic.
25–65 minutes: Move through the market's layers
Do not follow only one main aisle through Namdaemun Market. Accessories, children's clothing, kitchenware, and imported goods occupy different buildings and lanes, each operating on its own timetable. Have a meal in Kalguksu Alley or Galchi Jorim Alley, but do not reduce the area to a food destination. Namdaemun's essential function is wholesale: it sends merchandise to retailers across the country.
65–100 minutes: Cross Hoehyeon-dong and climb to an elevated walkway
Follow the slope south of Hoehyeon Station, look into the residential lanes, and then continue to Seoullo 7017. The Seoul Station overpass, built for cars in 1970, reopened as a pedestrian path in 2017. From above, Sungnyemun, the market roofs, Seoul Station, and Namsan all enter one field of view. The walk ends with a clear sense that heritage and modern infrastructure have never been separate here: each has repeatedly redirected the other.
