Freedom Bridge was not originally built as a finished monument to an abstract ideal. It is associated with the temporary railway crossing used for returning prisoners after the Korean War, and its present fabric includes later repairs and commemoration. It is also frequently confused with the nearby Dokgae Bridge, a visitor structure built on piers of the destroyed former Gyeongui Line bridge. The two sites tell related but different stories: return across a controlled line and the physical destruction of a railway. The word “freedom” also leaves room for those who never returned—abductees, missing people and displaced families. Compare the official map, surviving rail alignment and construction dates rather than using the names interchangeably.
