After Suncheon Bay's Ramsar listing brought it national fame, an ironic problem emerged: as visitor numbers surged to see the wetland, the sheer volume of foot traffic itself became a growing threat to the ecosystem it was meant to appreciate. To solve this, the city of Suncheon decided to build a large-scale artificial garden between the downtown area and the wetland itself. That space, created for the 2013 International Garden Expo, is what's now known as Suncheon Bay National Garden.
In other words, the garden was designed from the start to redirect tourists away from the wetland and toward the garden instead, reducing the direct pressure visitors placed on the fragile ecosystem. The strategy is generally considered a success, and in 2015 the site was officially designated Korea's first National Garden. With sections recreating gardens from around the world and attractions like the Skycube (an unmanned tram), it has since become one of Suncheon's leading tourist destinations in its own right. In building yet another artificial space specifically to protect nature, this garden forms a kind of mirror image of Suncheon Bay Wetland — pursuing the same goal by the opposite method.
