The site now occupied by the Suncheon Open Film Location was originally a military base. Starting in 2006, the site was developed into Korea's largest period-drama film set — and its layout is unusual: moving up a sloped hillside, visitors pass in sequence through a 1960s market town street, a 1970s hillside slum modeled on Seoul's Bongcheon-dong, and a 1980s Seoul outskirts neighborhood.
Across roughly 40,000 square meters, more than 200 buildings are packed tightly together, with every detail — tin roofs, broken briquette coal, uneven stairways — meticulously recreated to match daily life of each era. Films and dramas shot here include *Love and Ambition*, *Blue Swallow*, *Giant*, and *King of Baking, Kim Takgu*, and the site continues to draw more than 200,000 visitors a year. Notably, a large share of visitors are middle-aged and older — for them, this isn't just a movie set, it's a chance to physically walk back through the alleyways of the era they actually lived through. Ground where soldiers once trained has become a place where people travel back into their own past.
